INRI These four letters stand for the Latin phrase IESVS•NAZARENVS•REX•IVDÆORVM, which translates to English as:"Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews". It was the sign which Pontius Pilate had nailed above Jesus head at the crucifiction. The painting is a large scale depiction of Jesus pained face. The light makes a white cross-shape. A tear and a trickle of blood merge. ‘Did e’er such love and sorrow meet, Or thorns compose so rich a crown?’ |
